TMBA released the " Handbook on Sustainable Operation of the Machine Tool Industry in Response to Carbon Reduction"

Release date : 11.02.2022

Taiwan Machine Tool & Accessory Builders’ Association (TMBA) released the " Handbook on Sustainable Operation of the Machine Tool Industry in Response to Carbon Reduction" on 2022/10/14, calling on the industry to address the issue of carbon management.

Under the global trend of net-zero emissions and the EU carbon border adjustment mechanism, net-zero transformation is not only an environmental issue, but also an economic issue that concerns the international competitiveness of Taiwan's machine tool and accessory industry. Taiwan is an export-oriented economy, and the machine tool industry is a major exporter. Facing the challenges of global supply chain’s carbon reduction and the tightening of international carbon control, the transformation of the industry cannot be delayed.

In response to the global changes, machine tool industry must develop and apply energy-saving and carbon-reducing technologies through close international cooperation to seize the opportunity of net zero, further injecting new momentum for export orders, and strengthening the sustainable action, in order to realize the 2030 industrial development vision of the "2021 White Paper on the machine tool industry": to increase the added value rate and enhance the competitiveness of the industry.

More than 90% of the energy consumption in the entire life cycle of a machine tool is in the operation of the machine tool. Therefore, in addition to energy saving and carbon reduction of its own products, the machine tool industry should focus on how to help customers achieve the goal of low carbon production. In addition to providing energy-saving production equipment and strengthening the sustainable competitiveness of products, the development of a machine tool zero-carbon ecosystem for is a priority.

The manual proposes 4 Strategic Steps for the machine tool industry to establish green competitiveness in response to carbon issues: (1) Know yourself and your enemy: Carbon inventory. (2) Strategy of no regrets: Energy saving and carbon reduction. (3) Green resilience: Expand sources and reduce expenditures to explore more green competitiveness. (4) Green opportunities: Turn crisis into opportunity, creating new green business opportunities; and suggests 7 Main Focuses of Promotion Recommended, including strengthen the sustainable competitiveness and ecodesign of products, circular economy planning for the life cycle of all products, win-win collaboration across industry value chains, leverage digital technology to optimize management and manufacturing, strengthen the RAMSS  (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety, Security) of products, designing for a “sustainable future”: Introducing carbon-reduction materials, technologies and equipment, and in line with the net-zero emission norms of the global machine tool industry, etc., to meet the trend of sustainable management and environmental demands.

The machine tool industry is export-oriented, and downstream international customers have gradually requested the entire industrial supply chain to cooperate with carbon inventory and emission reduction, so as to reduce future carbon fees or carbon tax costs. For carbon reduction, it is recommended that business operators should start early and do it gradually, it will be easier. Focusing on sustainable management to make the company healthier.
